Review: NEKOPARA Vol. 1

NEKOPARA Vol. 1 is a kinetic novel (a visual novel with one linear plot instead of a branching one, with no choices and one ending), about a guy who leaves his home to fulfill his dream of opening his own patisserie. In the process, though, two of the family's catgirls, the twins Chocola and Vanilla, secretly follow him because they can't stand the thought of their dear Master leaving them. He will have to learn how to live with and take care of them, while the girls start working on his shop as maids.

Technical stuff

-H subgenre: Bishoujo with a bit of yuri in the H parts.

-Playtime: Took me about 8 hours to complete, with the +18 DLC.

-Where to get it?: You can get it on Steam for 9'99€, I guess about the same in dollars.

-Does it need a patch for +18 content?: Yes, and it's sold as a DLC for 8'19€, I guess about 10$. Without it, there are not sex scenes, although they're implied, and the bath scene is censored.

-Languages it comes in: Text comes in English, Traditional Chinese and Japanese. Voices are only in Japanese.

    -DLC's: There are four:

-Theme song: This is the OST.

-OVA Set: Contains an artbook and the OST from the OVA.

        -Artbook: Pretty self descriptive.

-+18 Adult only content: This is where the H scenes are. Speaks for itself really.

Fetishes it covers

NEKOPARA Vol. 1 goes hard for the Master x Pet kink. Which is the whole point of the catgirl plot actually. It also covers (or more like, focuses a lot on:) twins, incest, threesome, heat season, flat/small chest and (obviously) nekomimi/catgirl. I personally found it a bit annoying, but if you're into cute anime girls enthusiastically calling you “goshujin-sama!” every few seconds, this is definitely your game.

Ratings & review

-Art: 10/10. If you're looking for cute anime girls, perfectly drawn and perfectly 2-D Live animated, this is your game. The style is very nice, cohesive and detailed, and pairs up perfectly with the animations. The face expressions can get a bit weird sometimes, but I think that depends on one's personal opinion. Apart from the characters, everything else is just as well drawn. The food, the scenarios, the CG's, everything is gorgeus.

-Gameplay: None at all. It's a visual novel, even more, it's a kinetic novel. You read through it by clicking anywhere on the screen (or just set it to automatic text and sit back), and enjoy the scenes. The CG gallery outside of the game is pretty nice too, well organized, and you can replay only the H animations if you wish from there.

-Story: It's a pretty and wholesome story with some (very good) adult content sprinkled here and there, but it can get boring easily if you need more than just cute girls being cute to keep you interested. It's a slice of life in which nothing else than everyday life happens, but the scenes hold pretty well in their own genre. There are dramatic scenes, funny scenes, cute scenes, and they all do a good job at being what they are. But you have to like the slice of life genre to be able to enjoy them without getting bored.

-Bugs: As far as my experience goes, nonexistent, apart from some framerate drops because of the animations. But I do play on a shitty laptop.

-Fap worth: As long as you have the +18 DLC and you're into what this game presents to you, it's pretty solid as fap material. The H scenes are long and fully voiced and animated with different angles and positions each. They can be a bit boring though, and there aren't that many. Also, intimate parts are mosaic censored, but boobs are not.

Recommended?

Welllll... It depends. If you're looking for a H experience, you'll need the +18 DLC, and I feel like the game and DLC together are too expensive. The game is very good, but it's not too long. So I would recommend it, but only on sale. The game is a bit old, and they've published a lot of new NEKOPARA games since. So when it goes on sale, the 20$ price tag drops to 7 or 8. At that price, the quality of the game is well worth it.

Final rating is 8'5/10.
